After 11 years in journalism, it takes so much to make me sit again and actually mirror on my journey in this business, however being in a room full of Black women in media did precisely that. I left feeling impressed, inspired, and reminded of why I fell in love with storytelling in the first place. There was one thing particular about being surrounded by women who perceive the highs, the lows, the pivots, and what it takes to maintain exhibiting up in an business that appears to vary daily.

Carvd N Stone founder Nyesha Stone not too long ago introduced her Successful Black Women in News panel to Atlanta for the first time, and the timing couldn’t have been better. Held during NABJ weekend, the event drew a packed room of people who’ve supported Stone’s journey, those just being launched to her work, and media professionals searching for community and dialog.
Honestly, it was an awesome kickstart to NABJ weekend.
The panel introduced together Samantha Dorisca of AFROTech, Tierra Smith of Black Enterprise, Dawn Montgomery of Black Press USA, and Nikki Forman of Amazon.

The dialog was particularly mandatory contemplating today’s journalism local weather. Newsrooms are altering, layoffs continue to affect Black journalists and Black women in media, and the journalist versus influencer dialog has develop into inconceivable to disregard. Then add artificial intelligence into the combine, and many media execs are saying WTF and asking what the future of this business will really appear to be.

“That was the entire point of why I did the Successful Black Women in News panel, because we want areas to be ourselves, to let go, and determine out methods of how we will assist one another. A.I. is just yet another tool that’s been created over time.
We shouldn’t be scared, however we have to determine out how we wish to use it,” she added.
Journalism has never been a simple subject to be in, yet we as Black women and Black media discover a solution to hold moving into the subject. Outside of collaboration, Black women in news want to search out methods to model themselves. Make people see you AND be actually, actually good and what you do. Make it so nobody can deny your expertise or your model, and also you develop into unstoppable.”
Stone is aware of all too nicely about betting on your self.
She began Carvd N Stone in 2017 while she was a junior at UW Milwaukee and already incomes bylines in local newspapers. As she grew to become more accustomed to working journalism, she grew annoyed with how Milwaukee news shops lined the Black community. Instead of merely complaining about it, she determined to insurgent by telling the tales she felt had been lacking.
That resolution in the end gave her one thing conventional media couldn’t: freedom.
“A traditional job would have boxed me in to only cover certain beats. But because I created Carvd N Stone, I have been able to move entire states from Wisconsin to Georgia. I’ve interviewed top celebrities like Kerry Washington and Lionel Richie. I’ve covered Sundance and many other national festivals, all because I bet on myself. My client is Amazon. I’ve raised and awarded over $30,000 in scholarships through my company, and now we have a nonprofit arm: Carvd N Stone Foundation. Everything I have been able to accomplish in journalism is because I never once gave up on myself and my vision. I never would have been who I am if I had stayed in traditional news.”
