5 worst movies of 2025: ‘War of the Worlds,’ ‘Smurfs’ and more torture…

A line I get so much is, “Being a movie critic must be the best job in the world.”

    You’d assume!

But Hollywood so often has other concepts.

Even contemplating that there are always far more canine launched yearly than winners — test out my best-of-the-year record for those — 2025 was a real doozy.

The horrific torture was unfold across all genres — romantic comedy, science fiction, household and critical drama — and budgets. Some price $320 million, some appear like they price 320 pesos.

One made me google: “Does my health insurance plan cover ‘Smurfs’?”

    ‘The War of the Worlds’

Amazon’s atrocity made peeved viewers query the accuracy of its streaming service’s title. Prime Video? Perhaps Choice or Select can be a better match. Canner perhaps. “War of the Worlds,” which was made during COVID and then locked away for years only to interrupt out to terrorize viewers in June, was a 90-minute Zoom name with Ice Cube. In an in any other case empty workplace, he saves earth from an alien invasion from his desk. Optometrist ready rooms are more exhilarating. Forget 2025 — this is one of the lousiest of the decade.

James Corden voiced No Name Smurf in the abysmal “Smurfs.” AP

    ‘Smurfs’

I smurfing loathed it. Some would possibly say it’s imply to award zero stars to the tiny, speaking, blue, Belgian gnomes that had been created in the Fifties. You say imply, I say enjoyable! Surely if somebody may flip Legos right into a intelligent, emotional hit film, these filmmakers may do a lot better than having James Corden play No Name Smurf, an unbelievably silly character who goes on an agonizing quest to seek out his function.

    ‘A Big Bold Beautiful Journey’

I can’t write the excellent phrase to explain this offensively unhealthy romantic comedy, which revolves round a magic automotive. But know that it rhymes with “Chitty Chitty.” The star energy of Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell was not almost sufficient to salvage this sappy turd, the cliched script of which was virtually a pile of the worst motivational posters ever Scotch taped together.

Netflix’s “The Electric State,” starring Millie Bobby Brown, is one of the most costly movies ever made. Paul Abell/Netflix

    ‘The Electric State’

Since “Avengers: Endgame,” Anthony and Joe Russo have directed completely terrible movies. It’s virtually of their contract. The worst yet was also, by some means, one of the most costly movies ever made — with a reported price of $320 million. Why did it take such a staggering quantity of cash to have Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown pal round with extraordinarily annoying robots that appear like the Bob’s Big Boy mascot on Netflix? Beats me.

    ‘Ella McCay’

This one stung. James L. Brooks is a comedy icon who gave us “Broadcast News,” “Terms of Endearment” and “The Simpsons.” And for his first movie in 15 years, he pumps out the unwatchable “Ella McCay,” which is even worse than “Spanglish.” The film turns seasoned actors like Jamie Lee Curtis into hammy amateurs. And the screenplay — with particulars as particular as Ella turns into governor of “the state she was born and raised in” — has been mocked to high heaven on social media for weeks. And rightly so.
