Harry ‘stopped chilly’ after William used ‘3-word secret

As youngsters, they appeared inseparable, sharing a rock-solid bond that appeared unbreakable. But now, Prince William and Prince Harry have grown distant in an acrimonious feud with the relationship between the previously shut siblings dramatically reworked.

Since Harry stepped away from his royal duties for a recent start in the United States, he has only crossed paths with the now Prince of Wales on a few events – with no indication of a truce in sight, significantly following Harry’s tell-all memoir, Spare. Yet, certainly one of those strained encounters between the feuding brothers occurred in April 2021 when Harry flew again to the UK for the funeral of the late Prince Philip, mere weeks after his and Meghan Markle‘s sensational sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Many anticipated the somber event would function a possibility for the siblings to patch issues up, however in his memoir, Harry revealed that he was “stopped cold” during a confrontation with William, who deployed a “secret code” they reserved for “times of extreme crisis”.

The tense trade passed off on the day they bid their final farewells to their late grandfather with Harry recounting in the ebook how William compelled him to make eye contact so he might inform him that he liked him and needed him to be glad.

Harry recounts telling his brother he liked him however that his “stubbornness is extraordinary” before pulling away. He claims William pulled him again, saying: “Harold you must listen to me, I just want you to be happy, Harold, I swear, I swear on mummy’s life.”

According to Harry, this introduced each brothers to a standstill, as William had “used the secret code, the universal password, ever since we were boys those three words were to be used only in times of extreme crisis, ‘on mummy’s life’.” He elaborates that this vow had been reserved for moments when both of them felt a urgent should be heard.

Harry went on to say: “It stopped me cold, as it was meant to. Not because he’d used it, but because it didn’t work. I simply didn’t believe him.”

Elsewhere in Spare, Harry particulars how William bodily confronted him during a separate altercation at Kensington Palace, and in his contentious Netflix collection, he alleges his older brother raised his voice and yelled at him during a gathering.

This paints a vastly different image from the picture of the brothers as having an unbreakable bond – significantly in the aftermath of the tragic loss of life of their mom, Princess Diana.

However, royal biographer Ingrid Seward suggests the brothers have never actually been shut, and any potential reconciliation between them may very well be “many years” away.

Appearing on True Royalty TV’s The Royal Beat, she commented: “They painted this lovely picture that they were great friends, but they weren’t. There was always huge rivalry between them.

“They had been never actually nice buddies and I can not see [them coming back together] until perhaps many, many years in the future. If catastrophe struck one or other of them, that would convey them together. But I can not see it taking place [otherwise].”
