Jake Paul vs Gervonta Davis hits major stumbling

Jake Paul’s exhibition fight with Gervonta Davis has hit a major stumbling block. The proposed Nov. 14 event won’t be held in Georgia.

Paul, a cruiserweight, announced an exhibition fight with light-weight Davis late last month. Still, according to USA Today, the pair’s big weight discrepancy has seen Paul‘s promotional group, MVP, withdraw requests for event permits and rule waivers.

Rick Thompson, chairman of the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission, said: “I believe it’s in the public’s interest to know that because they’ve been promoting something they should not have been.”

The latest development comes days before the GAEC assembly to vote on a rule waiver that would have addressed the weight discrepancy. Davis has never weighed more than 140 lbs. Paul was 227 lbs. as just lately as last November, making the fight tough to quantify.

“They probably evaluated a situation—knew that their weight differences were too much,” added Thompson. BoxingScene stories that organizers are optimistic they’ll still make the fight occur despite the setback.

Organizers might look to maneuver the fight to a different state, with less than two months to go before the proposed Nov. 14 date. Whether the vote would’ve been unfavorable or favorable for the event is unclear.

However, Thompson wasn’t shy about making his emotions clear about Paul vs. Davis. “This is the dumbest (expletive) I’ve ever heard,” Thompson said. “It’s a money grabber, and I’m not OK with that’… I’m going to make my biggest case that this is not good.”

Paul was excited to step inside the squared circle with Davis, who he says is a “disrespected” fighter. “Gervonta who has been disrespecting my name for too long,” Paul said. “His nickname might be Tank, but I’m an FPV drone and I’m about to disable tiny boy.

One of Paul’s future goals is to fight Canelo Alvarez. However, the Mexican boxing icon was defeated by Terence Crawford in a Netflix spectacle for the status as the undisputed super-middleweight.

Paul mocked Canelo, who he was nearing a fight with earlier this year before his rival pulled a U-turn and signed a four-year deal with Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh. “Canelo placing his hand up like he received lol. dumb— mendacity weirdo. Canelo been over rated,” Paul taunted following Canelo’s defeat.
