National Symphony Orchestra members have described how Donald Trump’s renaming of the Kennedy Center has impacted the orchestra’s popularity and funds.

The Republican President modified the identify of the historic constructing, and it was revealed to have a new identify on December 19 through photographs of the heart on that day. The new architectural signage read: The Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts (also often called the Trump Kennedy Center). The heart’s board of trustees, hand-picked by Trump, voted on December 18 so as to add Trump’s identify. Trump is also the board’s chairman and hosted this yr’s Kennedy Center honors, which is a departure from the president’s custom of being a spectator at the event.

The NSO, whose dwelling venue is the Kennedy Center, has had members converse out and specific their distaste for the change, just like the backlash that has emerged from other artists that have been set to carry out in the upcoming season.

“Even the most far-right conservative, Trump-loving members of the orchestra who’ve loved the takeover are disgusted and terrified by the recent move of renaming the center,” an nameless member of the National Symphony Orchestra told NOTUS. “They just know inherently how difficult that’s gonna make every aspect of our lives by putting the man’s name on the building.”

The orchestra member mourned that the NSO’s Christmas-season performance of George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, a generally top-selling concert, “had anemic attendance this season.” They added to the outlet that “there’s a real fear that this is just adding another accelerant on a pretty outrageous fire.”

Another NSO member told NOTUS that the name change has generated “anxiety and confusion” among musicians. The same member further said that “there’s a lot of fear” pertaining to what could change in musicians’ collective bargaining agreement, which controls their employment terms.

When asked about the chances of NSO members publicly protesting the name change, the orchestra musician said to the outlet, “I don’t know because they’re scared. The way that things have been happening is just without any consultation with anyone, no meetings, no keeping us in the loop with anything. So, I see a lot of them just continuing, moving forward, just to keep their jobs.”

The orchestra member added, “I see a lot of artists now saying, ‘I don’t even want to be in a building with that man’s name on it.’ I don’t know how that’s going to impact the future performances, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it causes problems.”

The outlet stated they reached out to more than 30 NSO musicians, with most not responding or declining to comment.

Jennifer Mondie, chair of the NSO Orchestra Committee, told NOTUS in a statement, “At this time, musicians of the NSO do not wish to comment on our workplace. We hope you can understand and respect our position.”

With the name change, there have been show cancellations in protests. For example, 17-time Grammy Award winner Béla Fleck, canceled his upcoming Kennedy Center performance with the NSO on Tuesday.

In December, folk singer Kristy Lee announced that she was canceling her performance, scheduled for January 14. Chuck Redd, who is the longtime host of the annual Christmas Eve jazz concert at the center, also canceled the performance.

The Washington National Opera announced on Friday, January 9, that it was leaving the Kennedy center and ending their affiliation agreement.

Richard Grenell, who Trump appointed as the center’s executive director, called the artists who canceled “far-left political activists” and said their boycott is “a form of derangement syndrome” on X, previously Twitter

NSO, based in 1931, has had an inventive affiliation settlement with the heart since 1986. The Kennedy Center has been the dwelling for NSO’s live shows and performances. For the NSO to end the settlement and affiliation to the heart, its board and the Kennedy board must be in unison concerning termination.

The NSO members are soon to start new collective bargaining negotiations, following their last signed settlement in 2024, which expires early this yr.

Lucia Lostumbo, who served as assistant creative administrator for NSO until September, said to NOTUS that she believes the upcoming negotiations will “empower” members to talk up about the identify change. Lucia shared her considerations about how the adjustments the Trump administration has made may have an effect on recruitment.

She said she may see “less and less people are willing to even come and audition,” particularly if there are more open positions as a result of musicians departing or retiring early, and that may also damage the general high quality of the orchestra. Lucia continued to say that the orchestra can only have so many auditions from an administrative perspective.

The NSO is next scheduled to carry out Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring from January 15-17. The orchestra still lists the arts venue as The Kennedy Center on its on-line schedule.
