Portnoy wants Stephanie White axed after
Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham ignited controversy along with her stance on transgender athletes in women’s sports activities and locker rooms, as reported in a July ESPN piece.
Tensions escalated in the WNBA dramatically when Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington forcefully pushed Cunningham from behind during a first-quarter layup try, leading to Carrington’s ejection following a flagrant two foul name.
Barstool’s Dave Portnoy, a vocal supporter of Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever franchise, expressed disbelief and unleashed a passionate response during Monday’s ‘Wake Up Barstool’ program on FS1.
White guided Indiana to the WNBA Finals in 2025 during her preliminary tenure with the franchise. After rejoining the Fever in 2025, she introduced the squad within one victory of reaching last season’s championship sequence.
Currently, her team boasts a 20-12 file and stands as a respectable championship contender.
Having coached Carrington with the Sun during the 2023 and 2024 seasons, White supplied her perspective: “Yeah, I mean, look, it was a hard foul.
“I do not assume that DiJonai deliberately got here out to get her across the neck like she did,” White said. “But it did occur, and I believed it was the proper name.
“But you know, one of the things about Nay is that she’s gonna play her butt off, man. She’s gonna compete. Nobody’s gonna go walking in for a layup. And so, I don’t oppose the hard foul. But I also don’t think that she intentionally went for the neck.”
“Stephanie White, the coach of the Fever, I’ve been a defender. Get her out! Get her out of there. Fire her a–, today. I don’t want her back on that bench,” Portnoy said on ‘Wake Up Barstool. ‘.
“Stop defending the other players, that’s just her being her. You see Caitlin in the press conference, almost covering her ears and her eyes. Defend your players!”.
“First of all, you’re wrong,” he said as if White had been in the room. “It was a dirty play. But when do you ever see, in like the NBA, a coach not defend their own player? She hasn’t done it with Caitlin, [even] when she got punched in the throat.”
