The household of 22-year-old Asia Bennett is demanding solutions after a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officer shot and killed her during a home violence name, and ubiquitious civil rights lawyer Ben Crump is now serving to them push for transparency.
According to News4JAX, JSO officers responding to a reported dispute on Aug. 11 had been told Bennett had a knife. Police say she refused instructions to drop it and superior towards an officer, who shot her. Authorities declare Bennett later tried to rise up while still holding the knife, prompting a second shot. She in the end died after being taken to a hospital.
But Bennett’s household and Crump are calling that account into severe query. Witnesses reportedly dispute the timeline, saying the second shot occurred so shortly that Bennett couldn’t have gotten again up and superior towards officers as police declare. The household also says Bennett was a sufferer of home violence, not the risk JSO portrayed her as.
“We believe it was criminal how she killed Asia Bennett,” Crump said, referring to the officer. “But the breaking news is that she was shot in the back while she was on her hands and knees.”
According to JAXToday, Crump continued his comments:
“She was on the ground, not posing any threat,” Crump said. “The legislation is clear: Law enforcement can not use lethal drive until the individual poses an imminent risk of loss of life or severe bodily injury to the officer.
“How was Asia a threat while she’s on the ground on her hands and knees? How was Asia a threat if she was shot from her side in her back? … Courts have determined that force must stop the moment the threat is neutralized.”
Crump is demanding the release of body-camera footage and questioning how a name involving an alleged home violence sufferer ended along with her being shot twice. Now, the household needs the public to see precisely what occurred. Because when police say one factor and witnesses say another, transparency shouldn’t be handled like a favor.
