Lenny Kravitz set for Carrie Underwood role as NBA
Lenny Kravitz is set for a starring role on NBC’s new ‘Sunday Night Basketball’ program set to debut in February. The six-time Grammy winner will sing a weekly open just like Carrie Underwood’s intro on ‘Sunday Night Football.’
The 61-year-old singer of hits like ‘Fly Away,’ ‘American Woman,’ and other Nineties hit singles will get an opportunity to wow basketball viewers on NBC’s first foray since 2002.
‘Sunday Night Basketball’ will debut on Feb 1, 2026, with a doubleheader between the Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Knicks before the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder takes on the Denver Nuggets. Maria Taylor will host the studio present that includes Carmelo Anthony, Tracy McGrady, and Vince Carter.
“I have been a fan of basketball and the NBA since I was a kid,” Kravitz told NBC. “I am happy to be invited to take part with NBC Sports and the NBA, and I celebrate their support of sports, music, and culture. I am looking forward to this special moment.”
Kravitz’s tune won’t exchange the extremely acclaimed ‘Roundball Rock’ snippet, NBC’s intro music when the network hosted games from 1990 to 2002.
“A global icon with unmatched style and passion, Lenny is the perfect artist to set the tone for coverage of the biggest game of the week every Sunday night,” NBC Sports Creative Director Tripp Dixon said.
“As a fresh addition to our Sunday Night franchise, we’re excited for our Sunday Night Basketball anthem to capture the energy and spirit of the league, and with a superstar like Lenny at its foundation, we can’t wait for fans everywhere to see what we’ve cooked up.”
NBC will host 11 ‘Sunday Night Basketball’ reveals — after an hour-long ‘Basketball Night in America’ — over the second half of the season. The lead-in present for the network’s Monday and Tuesday broadcasts is called ‘NBA Showtime.’
The opener between the Lakers and Knicks figures to pit two groups each squarely in the thick of their respective convention playoff races at the time of the encounter.
