MLS owners set to vote on first new commissioner in 27 years…
The future of Major League Soccer will likely be mapped out on Monday when league owners are anticipated to vote on who will change commissioner Don Garber.
The next commish will want a two-thirds supermajority to win the vote, with LAFC co-owner Larry Berg and former Fox govt David Nathanson said to be the finalists, according to Sports Business Journal, which broke the story amid a flurry of soccer news on Thursday.
Berg and Nathanson will make final shows to the board and then the owners would take a vote, according to the report. Berg is believed to be the front-runner, SBJ indicated.

Berg is a part of the board and co-chairs Major League Soccer’s sporting and competitors committee, while Nathanson had a hand in Fox’s profitable bid to win the rights for the 2018, 2022 and 2026 World Cup and owns a stake in the Seattle Sounders.
Whoever wins the vote is believed to have to surrender their stake in the respective MLS club they maintain.
Garber is predicted to stay in his current position via the 2026 season before handing over the reins to his successor in January 2027.
Earlier this month, MLS issued a press release that the league’s board of governors “has been engaged in a comprehensive succession planning process.”
“As part of that effort, a number of highly qualified individuals have been considered. The MLS Succession Committee is working with the Commissioner and the Board on this ongoing process,” the league assertion also said.

With the chance of a new MLS commissioner being announced as early as next week, it will put a sundown on Garber’s 27-year run at the helm of the United States’ top soccer league.
Garber took over as commissioner in 1999 and has overseen the development of the league in each worth and the variety of groups.
He appeared to tout that during a latest media event held at the MLS’ new headquarters in midtown Manhattan.

“I will say that there was a time when I was concerned about salaries in Major League Soccer not being something that I can go home at night, put my head on the pillow, and feel good about. Today, I feel pretty darn good about it,” Garber said.
“Many of the players we bring home are making more money here than they’re making overseas. We’re signing young homegrown talent like Cavan Sullivan at 16 years old, and him make $500,000 a year- it just takes time. And you all [in the media] don’t have the interest in time. I’ve been doing this for almost 30 years. Somebody else is going to do it for another 30 years, and I could assure you that person’s not going to get asked these questions the way I’m getting asked today. I don’t mind them. It’s just part of the job.”
