Nick Reiner spoke about his struggles with drug dependancy before he was arrested in reference to the murders of his dad and mom.

He emphasized that his relationship with his father was not as it’s portrayed in the film with Charlie and his father. He said there were similarities with the actions of “holding the line” and “being powerful,” but the way they argued was not like the characters in the film. Nick amended that point, saying their arguments were “not fairly like that.”

Nick tried to find the words to describe how it was different, and Access host Billy Bush chimed in to say the character was “fiery,” and Nick was not.

And even though we had struggled through some difficult times and the making of the movie certainly dredged those things up, it was also an opportunity to work through a lot of that stuff.”

In a 2016 interview with PEOPLE, he spoke about how his dependancy led to him dealing with homelessness, which is one thing Charlie faces briefly in the movie.

“I was homeless in Maine. I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas,” Nick recounted. “I spent nights on the avenue. I spent weeks on the avenue. It was not enjoyable.”

He explained that his experience with homelessness came from his refusal to return to rehab. “If I needed to do it my method and never go to the packages they had been suggesting, then I needed to be homeless,” he elaborated.

Nick has shared that he started doing drugs at the age of 15 and went to rehab like 17-18 times. His last rehab visit was when he was 19, per PEOPLE.

Nick also told NPR in 2016 how he is a “spoiled, white, wealthy child from a Hollywood household, however I believe it is even more of a testomony to how highly effective medicine will be that you do not care about any of that stuff.”

He also shared how when he was on drugs he done similar things that Charlie had done in the film, like steal OxyContin from a sick, elderly woman.

“I’ve undoubtedly completed issues just like that,” Nick said. “I can not say I’ve completed that in fairly some time, however once I was going via a number of that stuff, positive, you do not actually suppose about something. You throw your morals out of the window.”
