A complete 12 months after Elphaba belted “Defying Gravity” midair and the credit of “Wicked” rolled, the witch is again in “Wicked: For Good,” an emotional and elongated version of the Broadway musical’s second act.
Theater-lover widespread knowledge has it that the first half of composer Stephen Schwartz’s “Wizard of Oz” riff based on Gregory Maguire’s novel is infinitely better than what comes after the toilet break.

Darker and grimmer Act 2, though, by a hair, makes a meatier film because characters aren’t as foolish — the first flick was virtually a pageant — and they’re really propelling towards a satisfying conclusion.

There is still one thing off about it. “Wicked” was largely enjoyable; a Dylan’s Candy Bar with singing. “For Good” is all tears — to the point I’m unsure children will take pleasure in it a lot. The creatives have been dumb (or grasping, or each!) to imbalance the musical by splitting it in two.
But the paths of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) as an activist insurgent making an attempt to tell oppressed Ozians that their vaunted wizard is a fraud, and that of Glinda (Ariana Grande) as a popular-if-conflicted authorities official tasked with elevating morale with glittery propaganda is much more compelling than “We weren’t friends, and then we were!”.
There’s a sole beam of lightness by means of the storm clouds. That belongs to Jeff Goldblum’s Wizard, who croons an old school showbiz tune called “Wonderful,” playfully telling idealist Elphaba, “you’ve got to give the people what they want.”
