Natalie Portman slams ICE as ‘the worst of humanity’ –

The Sundance Film Festival is in full swing in Utah, with a bunch of A-listing celebrities gracing film premieres and collaborating in Q&A classes.

However, the current political unrest in the United States, significantly in Minneapolis, Minnesota, threatens to forged a shadow over the movie competition. Nationwide protests have erupted in response to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement company (ICE) after two civilians had been fatally shot by ICE officers.

This past Saturday noticed the loss of life of 37-yr-previous VA nurse Alex Pretti on the streets, while Renee Good was killed on January 7 after being shot in the head in her automobile. While pop star Billie Eilish criticized fellow celebrities for his or her silence, many actors at the Sundance Film Festival have been vocal about the issue.

Among them is Natalie Portman, who has publicly expressed her stance by sporting pins that read “ICE out” and “Be Good,” the latter being a tribute to the late Renee Good. She’s attending the competition to advertise her new movie The Gallerist, which also options Jenna Ortega, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Charli XCX.

In a dialog with Variety, Natalie expressed her pleasure about “celebrating film” at the competition however acknowledged the troubling instances the nation is dealing with, stories the Mirror US.

“It’s really impossible not to talk about what is happening right now and the brutality of ICE and how it has to stop immediately,” she said. “But also, there’s a beautiful community that Americans are showing right now.

“They’re exhibiting up for each other, defending each other, and preventing for his or her freedom. It’s a bittersweet second to have a good time one thing we’re so proud of on the backdrop of our nation in pain.”

The Black Swan star didn’t hold back during her conversation with Deadline, declaring: “What’s occurring in this nation proper now is completely horrific. What the federal authorities, Trump’s authorities, Kristi Noem, ICE – what they’re doing is actually the worst of the worst of humanity.”

A demonstration dubbed “Sundancers Melt ICE” unfolded on Sunday, January 25, with organizers arranging a 10-minute “respectful” gathering on Main Street to honor the memory of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

Video footage captured by Deadline showed demonstrators raising their phones in solidarity while chanting “love melts ICE.”

Among those joining the protest were several notable figures from the film industry attending Sundance, including The Lord of the Rings actor Elijah Wood.

Speaking to Deadline, Wood expressed his concern, “The of us who’ve been unlawfully gunned down in Minnesota – it is terrible. Here we’re at this movie competition that brings people together; it is about telling tales from all over the world. We’re not divided right here; we’re coming together.”
